What is the liver?

This is where the liver is situated

  • The Liver is located on the right upper abdomen and is reddish brown in color.
  • Its size is five times the size of your fist.It is divided into two lobes, right and left. The right lobe constitute two third of the liver.
  • Liver main blood supply comes from portal vein which bring blood from gut rich in nutrient and the other supply is from hepatic artery.
  • Liver blood flows ot through hepatic veins into inferior vena cava.
  • Bile produced by liver goes to the gut through bileduct and help in digestion of food.
  • Gallbladder is located on the undersurface of the right lobe of the liver. It is a pear shaped organ,greenish in colour , stores bile and contract to release bile into gut when we eat food.

Functions of the liver?

  • Clear blood from toxins
  • Bile production for food digestion
  • Produces albumin and clotting factors
  • Metabolises the nutrient absorbed from gut.
