It is a relatively infrequent variety of Chronic Pancreatitis. It presents with recurrent pain ( after taking food), early satiety, nausea, vomiting and weight loss. Jaundice is relatively rare. Typically occurs in middle aged men with history of alcoholism.
diagnosis before surgery is difficult, CT scan shows features of inflammation along the pancreato-duodenal groove with or without mass formation in the adjoining head of the pancreas. Upeer GI Endoscopy obstruction of the duodenum.
Conservative medical management consists of painkillers, pancreatic rest and abstinence from alcohol.Endoscopic papillotomy is another option.
Surgery( Whipple’s operation) is the treatment of choice when symptoms do not improve or when the condition can not be distinguished from pancreatic carcinoma. It gives a log term pain relief and relief of other symptoms.
