If there is blood in your vomiting, it is probably due to bleeding from your upper GI tract ( esophagus, stomach and upper small intestine). The blood may be bright red or brownish or blackish in color. Sometimes bleeding from the nose or respiratory tract may be swallowed and confused as blood vomiting. Blood vomiting usually indicates serious problem and requires urgent medical attention.
Common causes include:
- Tumours or cancers
- Painkiller intake
- Liver failure/cirrhosis
- Blood vessel disorder (Dieulafoy’s lesion)
- Inflammation : Duodenitis/ Esophagitis / Gastritis
- Peptic ulcer
- Mallory-Weiss tear (tear in the esophagus)
- Pancreatitis (pancreas inflammation)
- EHPVO or Extra hepatic portal venous obstruction (block in the portal vein)
- NCPF or Non cirrhotic portal fibrosis
- Vigorous vomiting
