Pain in and around your anus or rectum (perianal region) — is a common complaint. Although the pain itself can be severe ,most causes of anal pain are not serious. Many conditions that cause anal pain may also be associated with rectal bleeding.
Causes of anal pain include:
- Anal fissure (a small tear in the lining of the anal canal)
- Perianal abscess (pus around the anus)
- Thrombosed Hemorrhoids or Piles (clots in the piles)
- Anorectal fistula (an abnormal channel between the anus or rectum usually to the skin near the anus)
- Chronic constipation
- Rectal cancer
- Crohn’s disease (a type of inflammatory bowel disease)
- Diarrhea
- Fecal impaction (hard stool in the rectum due to chronic constipation)
- Anal cancer
- Coccydynia or coccygodynia (tailbone pain)
- Proctalgia fugax (fleeting pain due to rectal muscle spasm)
- Proctitis (inflammation of the lining of the rectum)
- Pruritus ani (perianal itching)
- Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (ulcer of the rectum)
- Trauma
- Ulcerative colitis (a type of inflammatory bowel disease)
